RimWorld Sensory Mechanites: Duration, Treatment and Trade-offs

PAWN HEALTH / RIMWORLD 1.6

PC 1.6.4871 rev590 · Core rules, with DLC exceptions marked

Sensory mechanites last a random 15–30 in-game days. They boost Sight, Hearing, Talking and Manipulation, but cause pain and faster rest loss. Tending can lower the pain stage; it does not shorten the disease. The 48-hour interval is when another tend becomes available—not a cure time.

How long do sensory mechanites last?

Expect 15–30 days of active time from the start of each case. Duration is rolled per pawn, so colonists in the same outbreak do not have to recover together. The Health tab never shows a remaining-days countdown for this condition. Seeing it stay on the list after several treatments is normal.

This is a timer, not an immunity race. Better immunity gain, a better bed, and bed rest do not make that timer run faster. There is also no cumulative tend-quality target that clears sensory mechanites. The familiar 300% rule belongs to gut worms and muscle parasites.

One catch for calendar estimates: suspended pawns do not keep ticking normally. Cryptosleep and an Ideology biosculpter pause the condition. A pawn who spends ten days in a pod can still have mechanites more than thirty calendar days after the original diagnosis. That is not evidence that medicine failed.

Mild and intense: what actually changes?

The dividing line is 50% disease severity. Below that, the Health condition says “mild pain.” At or above it, the condition says “intense pain.” Capacity bonuses stay exactly the same. Treatment does not sacrifice the useful part of the condition.

Rest drain1.7× normal2× normal
Sight+50 points+50 points
Hearing+50 points+50 points
Talking+50 points+50 points
Manipulation+30 points+30 points

These bonuses are percentage-point additions to capacities, not multipliers on final work or combat output. +50 Sight is not +50% hit chance. Pain also cuts consciousness, which feeds into other capacities, so a healthy pawn does not simply land on baseline-plus-bonus for every displayed value.

“Sleep fall rate” is how quickly the Rest need drains. At the mild stage its baseline factor goes from 100% to 170%; at intense it becomes 200%. That does not mean “sleep 70% longer” or “sleep twice as many hours.” Bed rest effectiveness and other rest modifiers still shape the daily schedule.

Mild and intense sensory mechanites compared: equal capacity bonuses, but 20 versus 60 percent pain and 1.7 versus 2 times rest drain.
Keep the bonuses at the mild stage: lower pain and slower rest loss are the reasons to tend.

Why “mild pain” still hurts mood

The condition’s stage name and the pawn’s pain thought use different thresholds. On an otherwise healthy ordinary pawn, 20% pain produces the Serious pain thought at −10 mood. At 60% pain, the pain thought is −15 mood. The separate Sick thought is −5. Without modifiers or thought suppression, that is −15 or −20 combined mood from these two thoughts.

At 20% total pain, an otherwise healthy pawn loses about 4.4 consciousness points; at 60%, about 22.2 points. A masochist or a pawn with the Ideology Pain: Idealized precept can enjoy pain, but the mood benefit does not remove the consciousness penalty. Pain reduction and pain enjoyment are different effects.

Can sensory mechanites down or kill a pawn?

The condition has no lethal severity. An ordinary pawn reaches pain shock at 80% total pain, so intense mechanites’ 60% alone sits under the threshold. Add another 20 points of pain from wounds or another condition, and that margin can vanish. Always inspect total pain after modifiers.

Wimp lowers the usual threshold to 30%. Mild mechanites alone, at 20%, do not down an otherwise healthy wimp; intense mechanites do. Other traits, genes and health effects can change the outcome. See consciousness and pain shock when a pawn collapses: being downed from pain is not the same as having less than 30% consciousness.

Should you spend medicine on them?

Usually, tend them—then pick medicine by symptoms and stock. A strong tend can pull an intense case back to mild and keep the capacity bonuses. There is no upside to staying intense for a larger buff. For a stable pawn in a medicine shortage, doctor care without medicine is still an option, but weak results may not hold severity down.

  1. Open the pawn’s Health tab and set an appropriate medical-care policy. Assign a capable doctor.
  2. Read the actual quality of the completed tend. Do not assume a medicine type guarantees a particular result.
  3. Check pain, mood and Rest, then tend again when available. A condition still listed in Health is expected until the timer ends.

Untended severity rises by 25 percentage points per day. While treatment is active, subtract the actual tend quality in points per day. A 100% tend therefore nets −75 points per day; a 40% tend nets −15 points per day. Quality above 25% lowers severity; exactly 25% holds it; below 25% still lets it climb.

From maximum severity, a 100% tend crosses below 50% just after 16 in-game hours. A 40% tend leaves severity at 70% after 48 hours, still intense. “Treated” and “mild” are not the same label. Low-quality tending can help without clearing the painful stage in one cycle.

Severity cannot fall below 0.1%, so even excellent treatment cannot erase the condition by driving severity to zero. After all treatment coverage expires, the climb from that minimum back to intense takes about two days. Meanwhile, the independent disappearance timer keeps running.

Sensory mechanites tend calculator

Explore one fresh tend, starting with no previous treatment coverage. A mild or intense label alone cannot reveal exact severity; treat this as a scenario estimate when the numeric value is unknown. Enter the condition’s actual tend quality, not a doctor’s listed skill or medicine potency.

Prediction assumes no new tend, cure or suspension. Updates in the game occur in small steps, so boundary times are approximate. Earlier overlapping tends can extend coverage beyond this example. The hidden 15–30 day disappearance time cannot be calculated from tend quality.

Are sensory mechanites worth the pain?

You already have a pawn with them. What then? Vanilla Core has no normal recipe or injection for applying sensory mechanites on purpose. Mods that make them craftable or permanent follow their own rules.

Pawn’s roleBest use of the situationWatch for
Crafter or builderUseful Manipulation bonus while working. Tend to keep pain low.Lost awake time can erase gains in work speed. Faster work does not directly guarantee better item quality.
Social specialistTalking and Hearing bonuses can improve relevant social stats.Skill, task-specific limits and consciousness still matter; recruitment is not instantly successful.
ShooterExtra Sight may help accuracy within the shooting calculation.Capacity caps, weapon accuracy, pain and fatigue prevent a flat damage or accuracy bonus.
Hauler or cleanerKeep a sustainable sleep schedule and normal care.Sensory mechanites add no direct Moving bonus. This is not the fibrous variant.

A painstopper removes the pain component but does not cure mechanites or remove their faster rest drain. It also needs surgery and has its own costs. Royalty’s painblock can temporarily remove pain. Neither is required for every mild case. Skip an expensive medical plan around a temporary bonus unless the pawn has another reason to need it.

Why did several colonists get sick at once?

Sensory mechanites arrive through a disease incident; they do not spread from pawn to pawn. The incident rolls a group size around 20–50% of the candidate colonists and prisoners, with rounding and a minimum attempted selection of one. Eligibility checks and disease blocking can shrink how many actually get sick. It is not a separate 20–50% infection chance for every pawn.

This is a human disease event, not an animal disease event. Cryptosleep and biosculpter occupants are excluded. Penoxycyline does not prevent it: its coverage is malaria, sleeping sickness and plague. A shared outbreak is not a reason to quarantine every affected colonist or start an ineffective drug policy.

Does biome change the chance?

Yes. Biomes affect how often disease events are attempted and the relative weights of the diseases in that pool. The Core examples below are shares of the biome’s full disease-weight table, not daily infection probabilities or guaranteed frequencies among successful human outbreaks. Other event eligibility rules and difficulty affect actual results.

Core biomeBase disease MTBSensory weight / total
Temperate forest50 days30 / 670 ≈ 4.5%
Tropical rainforest35 days30 / 930 ≈ 3.2%

Boreal forest60 days30 / 570 ≈ 5.3%
Tundra80 days40 / 510 ≈ 7.8%
Ice sheet / sea ice90 days30 / 430 ≈ 7.0%

MTB is a mean time between general disease attempts, not a countdown to sensory mechanites. A larger percentage in a cold biome’s disease pool does not by itself mean more sensory outbreaks per year. DLC biome pools are separate.

What removes sensory mechanites early?

A healer mech serum can remove them, but you cannot choose its target. Life-threatening conditions, imminent fatal bleeding, permanent brain injury, large missing parts, eye scars and lethal immunizable diseases can take priority. With sensory mechanites as the only eligible bad condition, the serum can cure them. With several conditions present, do not assume that this is what it will select.

For most colonies, spending a rare serum on a temporary condition is a poor trade. Managing pain and rest until natural recovery usually costs less. If the pawn is repeatedly incapacitated or otherwise critical to the colony, read the whole health list before committing the item.

Medicine manages symptoms, healer mech serum can cure subject to priority, and penoxycyline and luciferium do not cure sensory mechanites.
Choose items for what they actually change. Ordinary medicine treats symptoms; a healer serum follows its own target priority.
  • Medicine: changes treatment quality and severity; does not shorten the disease timer.
  • Penoxycyline: neither prevents nor cures sensory mechanites.
  • Luciferium: does not remove this condition. Its permanent-wound healing is a different effect, and taking it creates a lasting dependency.
  • Biosculpter medic cycle (Ideology): does not cure sensory mechanites. They are absent from its disease cure list. Bioregeneration does not cure them either, and suspension pauses their natural countdown.
  • Bed rest: can help a tired or otherwise ill pawn, but does not clear sensory mechanites or build an immunity cure.

Sensory vs fibrous mechanites and other long illnesses

Fibrous mechanites15–30 active daysMoving, Manipulation and Blood Pumping +50 points. Same two pain and rest-drain stages.
Gut worms300% cumulative tend qualityMore hunger, vomiting and pain; no capacity bonus.
Muscle parasites300% cumulative tend qualityReduced Moving and Manipulation, pain and faster rest drain.

Sleeping sickness is different again: it is a potentially fatal immunity race. Do not transfer its treatment urgency or penoxycyline advice directly to sensory mechanites. Likewise, stacking multiple 100% tends works toward a gut-worm cure but never accumulates a sensory-mechanites cure.

Frequently asked questions

Do sensory mechanites go away on their own?

Yes. Each case lasts a random 15–30 in-game days of active time. Cryptosleep and biosculpter suspension pause the countdown.

Why are they still sick after treatment?

Treatment changes severity, pain and rest drain. It does not remove the condition or shorten its hidden disappearance timer.

Does penoxycyline prevent sensory mechanites?

No. Penoxycyline prevents malaria, sleeping sickness and plague; sensory mechanites are outside its protection.

Can sensory mechanites kill a colonist?

They have no lethal severity. Their pain can still cause pain shock when combined with wounds or a lower pain shock threshold, and mood and rest problems can make the pawn vulnerable.

Does a biosculpter medic cycle cure them?

No. Sensory mechanites are not on the Ideology medic cycle’s cure list. Time spent suspended in the pod also pauses their disappearance timer.

Are sensory mechanites good for shooters?

Sometimes. Extra Sight can help, but the shooting formula has capacity limits. Pain, consciousness loss and fatigue can offset the benefit; the bonus is not a flat increase to hit chance.
