How to Train Animals in RimWorld 1.6 | Taming Planner
RimWorld Taming Guide
Catch and keep the right beast without wasting food, handler hours, or training progress.
Use this poster-style planner to check the tame gate, feed choice, pen setup, and work-pet unlocks before you burn food or lose an inspired tame window.
90-Second Quick Solution
- Check minimum handling skill before you click tame.
- Bring food that matches the species diet. Wargs are meat-only.
- Use pens for stock, allowed areas for trainable roamers, and roof bird feed spots.
- Train guard / attack first for fighters, or push dogs into haul fast.
- Refresh training weekly and use a catalyst for rare high-wildness targets.
1. What Counts as Trainable
Diet + trainability rules| Type | Carry This | Avoid This |
|---|---|---|
| Herbivore / rough eater | Berries, corn, hay, veggies | Prepared meals for routine taming |
| Strict carnivore | Raw meat or corpses | Plants, kibble, grains |
| Omnivore | Raw meat, berries, vegetables, kibble | Burning through fine meals |
| Pack stock | Pen feed near the gate | Long pathing to random stockpiles |
Vanilla Core still splits the board cleanly: most caravan animals are packers, not fighters, while most true work pets live in the Intermediate or Advanced trainability tiers. The live planner below uses each species' local 1.6 Core diet and trainability values.
2. Pens, Fences & Birds
Containment that actually worksPen animals still want a valid fenced space until an Odyssey catalyst changes their behavior. For birds, roof the food corner and feed inside the coop instead of trusting a bare open pen. That matters more once flying-animal behavior enters the map.
If your handlers keep crossing the whole colony to train, shrink the work loop: gate, feed, sleep, and medical spots close together. That is often a bigger win than squeezing a few extra percentage points out of the tame formula.
Post-1.6 bird safety: roofed feed beats open pens
3. The OH NO List
Handling gate + revenge risk| Animal | Min skill | Fail risk |
|---|---|---|
| Alpaca | 2 | 0% |
| Muffalo | 6 | 0% |
| Wild boar | 5 | 0% in Core, but they still hit back hard if already hostile |
| Thrumbo | 10 | Use Inspired Taming or catalyst |
| Warg | 6 | 40% manhunter on failed tame |
The handling gate is where bad taming plans start. In current 1.6 behavior, the old wildness-times-ten shortcut no longer holds: 25% wildness animals like alpacas sit at 2, 60% animals like muffalo and wargs sit at 6, and 98% thrumbos stay at 10.
4. Inspired Taming Wins
Save the miracle momentInspired Taming guarantees success only if the pawn already meets the minimum handling skill. That is why the thrumbo route in 1.6/Odyssey is not just “wait for inspiration.” You also want either a level-10 handler or a catalyst that drags the requirement down first.
Odyssey's sentience catalyst permanently lowers wildness by 25%, upgrades trainability by at least one tier, and is now documented as removing roaming and fence-blocked status from pen animals in update 1.6.4566 on August 28, 2025.
Best late-game flip: catalyst + inspiration + thrumbo
Troubleshooting Diagnostics
Fix the common failures fast| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Animal will not follow master | Obedience incomplete, follow toggle off, or pen / area conflict | Finish Obedience, verify follow settings, and clear pen or zone conflicts. |
| Training does not stick | Wildness too high, handler travel too long, or old pre-4566 catalyst behavior | Refresh weekly, move feed closer, and treat very wild targets before heavy training. |
| Birds keep escaping or starving | Open pen feed, no roofed food point | Build a roofed coop corner and keep feed inside it. |

Training Workflow
The fast lane is about picking the right animal, reducing travel time, and using the right unlock order for the job you actually need.
1. Start with the gate, not the dream
If the species' minimum handling skill is above your current handler, do not dump food into low-odds attempts. Train easier animals, wait for inspiration, or use a catalyst first.
2. Build a short handling loop
Put feed, animal beds, medicine, and pen gates near your handler path. Long walks are the hidden tax behind “training decay feels too fast.”
3. Unlock by role
Bodyguards: Obedience, then Release, then Rescue. Haulers: Obedience, then Haul once the species qualifies. Pack stock: focus on pen quality and caravan access because most of them are not true work pets.
4. Refresh weekly
Do a training pass once per in-game week instead of waiting for everything to slide. After the August 28, 2025 patch, catalyst-adjusted wildness now behaves correctly for decay and upkeep.
5. Use follow toggles on purpose
Core AI only routes animals into follow / defend jobs when Obedience is complete and the follow-master condition is satisfied. If you want a combat pack, do not leave those toggles in the wrong state.
6. Treat birds as containment problems
Post-Odyssey bird management is about roofed feed and tight enclosures, not just a fence line. A roofed coop corner fixes more escapes than bigger pens do.
Best Animals By Role
These picks balance body size, hunger, trainability, pack status, and combat pressure under current 1.6 handling rules.
Early haulers
Husky and labrador retriever are still the cleanest early work pets: 0 wildness, Advanced trainability, body size above the haul threshold, and no strict-meat trap.
- Husky: body size 0.86, move speed 5.0, Advanced trainability.
- Labrador retriever: slightly smaller, slightly cheaper to feed.
- Warg only becomes a true hauler after an Odyssey catalyst upgrades it from Intermediate to Advanced.
Bodyguards
Thrumbo, grizzly bear, and elephant are the bruisers. Cougars are quicker midgame attackers, while wargs are excellent meat-fed ambush animals once their 40% failed-tame revenge risk is behind you.
- Thrumbo: 0.98 wildness, 8.0 health scale, 500 combat power.
- Grizzly bear: 2.15 body size, 2.5 health scale, Advanced trainability.
- Elephant: pack animal plus Advanced trainability if you can afford the feed.
Caravans and ranching
Alpaca, dromedary, yak, and muffalo stay top-tier for carrying the colony economy. They solve trade lanes, not hauling inside the base.
- Alpaca and dromedary: low handling gate at skill 2.
- Yak: skill 2, strong cold route option.
- Muffalo: better payload and wool, but current handling gate is 6, not a starter-animal freebie.
What Changed In 1.6 And Odyssey
Here is the short version of what changed, what stayed the same, and which 2025 fixes actually matter for day-to-day handling.
| Topic | Vanilla 1.6 Core | Odyssey / patch change | Why you care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base training chain | Tameness, Guard, Attack, Rescue, Haul are defined in Core trainables. | Odyssey adds extra animal work hooks such as Forage and Dig in the animal think tree. | Advanced trainers can now build real utility packs instead of pure combat or hauling lines. |
| Sentience catalyst | Odyssey-only item. | Official preview on July 4, 2025 introduced it. Current wiki documents -25% wildness, trainability upgrade, and allowed-area behavior for former pen animals. | This is the cleanest way to convert hard wild targets into useful work animals. |
| Flying animals | Core 1.6 announcement flagged support hooks. | Official June 11, 2025 announcement called out flying animals, which changes fence assumptions for birds. | Roofed coop feed matters more than raw pen size. |
| Training decay fix | Training upkeep depends heavily on wildness. | Update 1.6.4566 on August 28, 2025 fixed catalyst-adjusted wildness problems for training decay and roaming behavior. | Post-fix weekly maintenance schedules are trustworthy again. |
| Fishing edge case | No direct local animal-fishing data here. | Update 1.6.4630 on October 31, 2025 fixed cases where animals could not fish on ocean water. | Niche, but relevant if your utility-animal colony leans on coastal fishing. |
Feed Math And Auto-Slaughter
Food waste kills animal plans faster than raiders do. Separate work pets from ranch stock and keep winter buffers visible.
Feed priorities
Kibble is not universal anymore if you are handling strict carnivores. Wargs keep the classic trap alive: they look like cheap combat animals until the colony realizes they will not eat the same pile as dogs.
Pen stock versus work pets
Keep pack stock and egg layers on a separate feed budget from haulers and fighters. That prevents your dogs from eating through winter hay or your birds from starving while a handler crosses the entire map.
Cold-weather buffer
Once grazing drops off, the emergency switch is simple: hay first for herbivore stock, meat reserve for strict carnivores, and a dedicated animal fridge so pets do not burn colonist meals.

Troubleshooting
Most failures boil down to one of four buckets: handling gate, wrong food, wrong container, or wrong job expectations.
Animal will not follow master
Finish Obedience first. Then check the follow-master toggles, draft state, and whether the animal is still bound to a pen or blocked allowed area. Core AI only enters the master-follow job chain when that condition passes.
Training refuses to stick
The usual culprit is wildness plus travel time. The higher the wildness, the worse the upkeep feels. Tighten the training loop, refresh once per week, and stop trying to build a whole combat roster before your handler skill catches up.
Pen animals keep escaping
Look for diagonal leaks, bad gate states, or feed placed outside the intended enclosure. For birds and other flying creatures, roof the feed corner and stop assuming the fence alone is the container.
Why is my muffalo not hauling?
Because a muffalo is a pack animal with None trainability in current game data. It caravans well, it grows wool, but it is not a vanilla hauling pet unless an Odyssey catalyst changes its trainability first.
Is a sentience catalyst worth using on wargs?
Usually yes. It cuts wildness, drops the handling gate, and upgrades Warg trainability from Intermediate to Advanced, which can open rescue and haul on top of combat use. That is one of the cleanest late-midgame catalyst conversions.
Why does thrumbo taming still fail with inspiration?
Because inspiration ignores chance, not the minimum handling gate. You still need the required Animals skill after all current wildness effects, or you need a catalyst first.
Code Checkpoints
These are the game rules behind the planner recommendations.
Trainables.xml defines the main ladder: Guard requires Tameness, Attack requires Guard, Rescue needs Advanced trainability plus body size 0.65, and Haul needs Advanced plus body size 0.40.
Animal.xml shows that Obedience is what unlocks master-follow and defend-master behavior, Rescue checks nearby allies, Haul fires on a periodic job chance, and Odyssey hooks add Forage and Dig jobs into the same animal AI tree.
Dialogs_Various.xml also exposes the pen-side rule text: “Tameness will never decay for animals that can be kept behind fences.” That is why pen-stock upkeep works differently from trainable roamers.
