How To Become A Mechanitor In RimWorld

Fastest vanilla path: destroy exostrider midsection → decrypt mechanoid transponder → beat MechanitorShip → install mechlink on a psychically sensitive pawn with Smithing + Intellectual. This page is for colonies that are not mechanitors yet.

Deaf = blocked install Fight ship early Don’t abandon before midsection Then Basic mechtech
1 Map remains Kill midsection

Destroy midsection → decrypt → early ship fight

Stay on this map until the midsection dies and the transponder is in hand.

Exostrider Remains still on player map Abandon map before midsection dies
Ancient complex Storyteller catch-up: OpportunitySite / GiveQuest AncientComplex_Mechanitor Ignoring the quest while waiting for a lost exostrider
Have mechlink Item already in inventory / quest reward Installing on a psychically deaf pawn
Mechanitor rescue flow
Biotech on?
No -> Stop. No vanilla mechanitor.
Exostrider midsection still on map?
Yes -> Destroy midsection (~500 HP wick) -> get mechanoid transponder
-> Decrypt at research bench -> MechanitorShip
      -> Fight EARLY (threat × 0.5) -> loot mechlink
No -> Wait for / take the ancient mechanitor complex quest
Have mechlink?
  Install on psychically sensitive pawn
  Prefer Smithing + Intellectual capable
Research Basic mechtech -> Signal Chip page
Hard Warnings · Three ways colonies brick the chain

1. Psychically deaf

Mechlink install needs a psychically sensitive pawn. Deaf pawns are a hard block, not a soft skill problem.

Psychically sensitive → can install
Psychically deaf → cannot install

2. Late MechanitorShip

Combat strength scales with current threat points × 0.5. Wealthy colonies make the crash ship meaner. Fight early.

Ship strength ≈ threatPoints × 0.5
Early poor colony → easier
Late wealthy colony → harder

3. Abandon before midsection

Moving or abandoning the home map before destroying the midsection loses the remains. That is the practical chain break.

Keep map → kill midsection → transponder
Leave early → remains gone → use complex quest
Player rule: Do not “just relocate once” while the giant dead mech is still sitting on the starter tile. Finish the midsection first, or you are choosing the slower catch-up quest on purpose.
Install Check · Who actually gets the mechlink

Checking

Tick the boxes for your candidate

Sensitive is mandatory. Smithing and Intellectual warn at install time; they do not hard-block the surgery, but they brick the lifestyle afterward.

Install vs lifestyle
Check Hard block? What breaks if you ignore it
Psychically sensitive Yes Cannot install mechlink at all
Psychically deaf Yes (blocked) Same wall — deaf cannot install a mechlink
Smithing capable No — warns Cannot gestate mechs cleanly
Intellectual capable No — warns Mechtech research / study ladder stalls

Treat the warnings as “you will hate this pawn in a week,” not “the surgery button is grey.” Pick someone who can live the job: Smithing + Intellectual + not deaf.

Full Chain · From corpse pile to Basic mechtech
Step ladder
Step What you do What you get
1. Find remains Confirm ancient exostrider remains still on the home map Midsection target on home tile
2. Kill midsection Damage until it detonates near ~500 HP left; survive the blast 1 mechanoid transponder
3. Decrypt Analyze / decrypt at research bench MechanitorShip quest starts
4. Crash ship Assault early while threat is low (× 0.5 scaling) Mechlink loot
5. Install Sensitive pawn; heed Smithing / Intellectual warnings Colony has a mechanitor
6. Research Unlock Basic mechtech Ready for Signal Chip / Standard ladder
Backup: ancient complex

If the remains are gone or the storyteller decides you waited too long, watch for the ancient mechanitor complex quest. That is the catch-up path, not a random side story.

  1. Accept the mechanitor ancient complex quest when it appears.
  2. Run the site for the mechlink reward path instead of staring at an empty starter map.
  3. Come back to the same install rules: sensitive pawn, Smithing + Intellectual preferred.
Do not mix pages: Signal Chip content assumes you already finished this ladder. Diabolus summon is step two of the career, not step one.
After Install · Basic mechtech, then Signal Chip

Once the mechlink is in, you are finally on the page the Signal Chip guide assumes. Research Basic mechtech, stand up gestation basics, then push the Diabolus + Study route for Standard mechtech.

Next: get a Signal Chip

Powered comms console → hostile Diabolus → signal chip → study for Standard mechtech. That post covers boss cooldown, non-consuming study, and bandwidth pack spend choices.

Immediate post-install checklist
  • Confirm the new mechanitor is the one you meant — no accidental deaf install attempts left on the workbench.
  • Queue Basic mechtech research on someone who can actually do Intellectual work.
  • Plan a gestation bay / power once Smithing work is available.
  • Only then open the Signal Chip page and prep a Diabolus day.
FAQ · Player questions that keep coming up
What is the fastest vanilla mechanitor path?
Destroy the ancient exostrider midsection, decrypt the mechanoid transponder at a research bench, beat MechanitorShip early, install the mechlink on a psychically sensitive pawn, then research Basic mechtech.
Can psychically deaf pawns become mechanitors?
No. The pawn must be psychically sensitive. Deaf is a hard stop.
Why does waiting make MechanitorShip harder?
Ship combat strength scales with current threat points × 0.5. Wealthier colonies carry higher threat, so the crash fight grows with you.
I moved base and the giant mech is gone. Now what?
Leaving before the midsection dies loses the remains. Use the storyteller’s ancient mechanitor complex quest as the backup path.
Do Smithing / Intellectual block the surgery?
They warn; they do not hard-block install. Ignoring them still wrecks gestation and mechtech research, so treat the warning as a veto unless you enjoy babysitting a broken career.
I already have a mechanitor. Is this the Signal Chip page?
No. Jump to How to Get a Signal Chip for Diabolus summon, study unlocks, and Standard mechtech.
