RimWorld How to Get Books (1.6) | Trader Routes, Quest Books & Setup Tool
Books in RimWorld: who really sells them, when quest books fire, and the fastest route to get one now
In the installed 1.6.4633 rules, the clean vanilla book routes are bulk goods traders, exotic goods traders, and faction bases. Outlander visitors and combat suppliers are dead ends for books. With Odyssey active, maps are the guaranteed quest book and other non-schematic books can also roll quests.
0.8 and gains +2% per Intellectual level.
Book Route Picker
Pick what you need and the tool will tell you which book type to chase, where to look first, and which trader kinds are not worth the silver or travel time.
- Installed 1.6.4633 rules: Outlander visitors and combat suppliers do not stock books.
- Faction bases: Both outlander and neolithic bases can roll book stock.
- Exotic goods: Best tome route once Anomaly is enabled.
Who Actually Stocks Books
The table below follows the installed 1.6.4633 trader rules instead of vague “check any trader” advice. If a route is marked empty, you can safely deprioritize it for books.
| Trader Kind | What Books Can Spawn | Best Use | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orbital bulk goods | Textbook 1~2, Schematic 1, Novel 1 |
Fast vanilla refills from a comms console | No caravan travel, stable vanilla book stock, best routine first check. |
| Outlander bulk goods caravan | Textbook 0~2, Schematic 1, Novel 1 |
Early vanilla books without orbital infrastructure | The clean ground route for core books if you have a trading spot but no comms room yet. |
| Orbital exotic goods | Textbook 1~2, Schematic 1, Novel 1, Tome 1 with Anomaly |
Best high-end refresh, especially for tomes | The installed rules give this route a guaranteed tome slot when Anomaly is active. |
| Outlander exotic goods caravan | Textbook 1~2, Schematic 0~1, Novel 0~1, Tome 0~1 with Anomaly |
Best ground tome hunt | Use this when you need Anomaly research but orbital traders are dry. |
| Outlander base trade | Mixed Books category, plus extra Schematic 1, plus Tome rolls with Anomaly |
Best caravan destination when you want reliable mixed stock | Faction bases are stronger than random visitors because they can roll category books and an extra schematic. |
| Neolithic base trade | Mixed Books category, plus Tome rolls with Anomaly |
Useful fallback if tribal neighbors are all you have | Tribal settlements are not dead zones for books once bases are involved. |
| Neolithic shaman merchant | Tome 0~1 with Anomaly, no core books |
Backup tome route | Good to know on tribal-heavy worlds where exotic outlanders are scarce. |
| Outlander visitor | None | Skip for books | Visitors can bring techprints, but this route does not carry books at all. |
| Combat supplier | None | Skip for books | Combat suppliers carry techprints and combat gear, not book stock. |
What Each Book Type Actually Does
Books all fill Reading recreation, train Intellectual, and benefit from room reading bonus. The difference is what extra value they give once a colonist sits down.
- Novel: Pure recreation. The current wiki lists quality-based recreation multipliers from
120%to250%. - Textbook: Skill XP while recreating. Odyssey can also make non-schematic books generate with quests.
- Schematic: Research points for specific unfinished projects. Gravtech and mechtech projects are excluded from the normal spawn pool.
- Tome: Anomaly-only dark study progress plus a
1%~5%per-hour mental break risk per current wiki. - Map: Odyssey-only, no quality, always contains one quest, and can still be shelved after it fires.
| Type | DLC | Main Effect | Quest Behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novel | Core | Best recreation fill, quality scales joy speed | 5% chance to generate with a quest when Odyssey is active |
| Textbook | Core | Skill XP while recreating | 1% chance to generate with a quest when Odyssey is active |
| Schematic | Core | Research points on one or two unfinished projects | No quest generation |
| Tome | Anomaly | Dark study progress with mental-break risk | 15% chance to generate with a quest when Odyssey is also active |
| Map | Odyssey | Pure quest book, no quality tier | Guaranteed quest, trigger check MTB 12,500 ticks |
Base books share 60 HP, 0.5 mass, and DeteriorationRate 5, which is why shelving them early is worth it.
Quest Books and How to Trigger Them
If the colony owns Odyssey, books become a real quest engine instead of just a passive training item. Maps are the cleanest route because the quest is guaranteed instead of rolled.
Fastest Quest Route
- Buy or win an Odyssey map.
- Allow the pawn to read during normal recreation or force Read with a right-click.
- Expect quest checks on a mean timer of 12,500 ticks, about 3.47 minutes at 1x speed.
- After the quest pops, keep the map in a bookcase for reading bonus or sell it back out.
What Changes With Odyssey
- Live wiki version history notes that Odyssey makes all book types except schematics eligible to generate with quests.
- That means novels, textbooks, tomes, and maps can all contribute quest content, but maps are the only guaranteed route.
- If travel is slow, hold maps until you can actually answer distant timers. The map page warns that early-game travel can waste the opportunity.
Build a Reading Room That Pays Off
Books are much stronger when the room is designed on purpose. Bookcases matter immediately, and the current wiki fills in the scaling rule.
Code-Backed Setup Notes
- Bookcases: Full bookcase stores
10books, small bookcase stores5, and stored books never deteriorate. - Research benches: Both simple and hi-tech research benches draw placement lines to bookcases in the same room.
- Bench speed: Simple bench has
ResearchSpeedFactor 0.75; hi-tech bench has1.0. - Reading speed: Base reading speed is
0.8, plus0.02per Intellectual level before light, sight, and consciousness modifiers. - Reading bonus: Live wiki says each shelved book adds
+0.8%room reading bonus, up to+20%.
room: library_lab
target: fastest_research
bookcases:
- full_bookcase x1
- small_bookcase x1
seat: armchair_or_dining_chair
bench: hi_tech_research_bench
notes:
- Keep books in the same room as the bench
- Use bright light so the reader keeps full speed
- Forbid tomes to unstable pawns during raids
- Let weak researchers read schematics during rec time
Fastest Loop for Getting Books
If you just want a book today, stop wandering randomly. Run a short loop that respects which trader kinds actually carry them.
Recommended Order
- Step 1: If you have a comms console, scan orbital bulk goods and orbital exotic goods first.
- Step 2: If you need normal books, visit outlander bases before burning caravan time on random visitors.
- Step 3: If you need tomes, pivot hard to exotic goods routes or tribal shaman merchants.
- Step 4: Ignore outlander visitors and combat suppliers for books. They do not carry book stock.
- Step 5: Keep silver liquid. Books are light and non-stackable, so the bottleneck is trader appearance, not caravan weight.
When Vanilla Is Not Enough
Vanilla gives you acquisition and reading. If you want to author books or build runs around raiding libraries, these are the current useful branches.
Best Current Picks
- Vanilla Books Expanded: The straightforward answer if you want to write your own books instead of only buying them.
- Alpha Books: Best for adventure colonies that want powerful one-use books, library raids, and more dramatic book loot.
- Dynamic Trade Interface: Pure quality-of-life. Helpful when you are speed-scanning large inventories for book stock.
- Realistic Orbital Trade: Only worth it if you already enjoy more logistics friction. It slows the easy orbital resupply loop.
- RimWriter: Old writing mod, but current community notes point to it being deprecated. Prefer VBE for a fresh install.
Why Books Are Not Showing Up
Most “books never spawn” complaints are really trader selection mistakes or research-rule misunderstandings. Use the grid below before blaming RNG.
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No schematics for the project I want | Project is techprint-gated or mechanitor-linked | Use techprints or mechanitor progression instead. Live wiki only notes edge-case exceptions such as Wastepack atomizer and Ultra mechtech. |
| I keep checking traders and seeing nothing | You are using visitors or combat suppliers | Switch to bulk goods, exotic goods, or faction bases. Those are the real book routes. |
| I want tomes but only see normal books | Anomaly is off or you are not targeting exotic goods | Enable Anomaly and prioritize orbital exotic or caravan exotic. Tribal shaman merchants are the low-tech backup. |
| Map quest is not popping | The pawn is not actually reading the map long enough | Allow recreation time or force a read. Odyssey map trigger checks use a mean timer, not an instant fire. |
| Pawn will not read a good book | Reading policy blocks the type or the pawn lacks sight/manipulation | Open Assign → Reading policy, allow the right book types, and make sure the pawn can see and handle items. |
| Modded medieval run never shows schematics | Mod tech-level filters are narrowing the pool | Check mod settings such as Medieval Overhaul world tech restrictions before assuming spawn rules are broken. |
