RimWorld: No Warden Capable of Enslavement — How to Fix It

PRISONERS · IDEOLOGY

PC 1.6.4871 · Unmodded · Ideology required · Updated September 23, 2026

RimWorld shows “No warden is capable of this enslavement.” when no free colonist on the prisoner’s map has Warden work enabled and a Slavery precept that allows the job. Check that colonist’s precept: Abhorrent refuses; Horrible, Disapproved, Acceptable, and Honorable allow it. Leave the prisoner’s Enslave order selected.

A prisoner room and a warden, with the three requirements for the enslavement warning.
Start with the colonist assigned to Warden. The prisoner’s beliefs do not decide whether that colonist is willing.

Fix the warning in three checks

  1. Enable Warden on an eligible colonist. Open Work and check Warden. With manual priorities, use 1–4; a blank entry is off. A pawn incapable of that work type cannot become a warden by changing the priority number. Low Social slows the job; it is not a hard refusal by itself.
  2. Keep that colonist on the prisoner’s map. A solid warden in a caravan, at another settlement, or in cryptosleep fails this check. Moving the prisoner to your main base only helps if a willing warden is present there.
  3. Inspect that warden’s ideoligion. If Slavery is Abhorrent, pick someone with a different precept. Raising Social or bumping priority does not override the block. Psychopath does not bypass this precept.

Leave Enslave selected on the prisoner. You do not need to re-click it just because the warning showed. The message appears when you choose the order; it is not a live status light. After someone qualifies, normal work scheduling and prisoner conditions still matter.

If nobody can do Warden work, bring in another eligible colonist. Existing slaves cannot cover it: slaves cannot do Warden work in unmodded RimWorld. If you would rather not run slavery, use recruitment for recruitable prisoners instead.

Which Slavery precepts allow enslavement?

Among the five standard Slavery precepts, only Abhorrent blocks the job. Horrible and Disapproved still allow the visit; they hit mood and opinion afterward. You do not need to push the whole colony to Honorable.

Warden’s preceptCan enslave?Personal event memoryColony event memory*
AbhorrentNoCannot perform itNo enslavement mood memory†
HorribleYes−10 for 6 days−3 for 6 days
DisapprovedYes−5 for 6 days−2 for 6 days
AcceptableYesNoneNone
HonorableYes+4 for 6 days‡+2 for 6 days‡

*Colony memories follow each observer’s own precept, not the warden’s. These are separate event memories, not a pawn’s total mood change. †Abhorrent still carries other consequences, including disapproval of keeping slaves and of the enslaver. ‡Honorable’s positive enslavement memories apply only when the prisoner has never been enslaved before.

Horrible and Disapproved personal penalties also apply when you re-enslave a former slave. Honorable’s first-time bonus does not cancel those penalties. Personal event memories stack once; colony event memories can stack on their own.

A mixed-ideoligion colony can supply a willing warden

The colony’s dominant ideoligion is not a global on/off switch. One eligible colonist with a non-Abhorrent precept and Warden enabled can clear the warning. Other colonists can still dislike slavery. Converting the prisoner does not change the warden’s beliefs, so it will not fix that warden’s refusal.

The warning is gone, but nobody is enslaving

The warning only asks whether a qualifying warden exists. It skips many job-start checks. A sleeping, drafted, or downed colonist can still pass that narrow test while doing no useful work.

  • Confirm the interaction mode. Enslave works toward enslavement. Reduce will only stops at zero. Maintain only does neither.
  • Check the prisoner’s condition. They must be awake, secure, and out of a mental state. A downed prisoner must be in bed. An awake prisoner who can stand does not need to stay in bed for every visit.
  • Check access. Use an enclosed, accessible prisoner room and prisoner bed. Clear forbidden tiles, restrictive allowed areas, and blocked paths. Another pawn reserving the prisoner can delay the job; a prisoner forming a caravan is also unavailable.
  • Check the warden’s condition. The job needs Talking and Manipulation. Showing up on the Work tab does not prove both capacities are usable. Undraft the warden, clear their mental break or medical problem, and give them time to work.
  • Allow an interaction slot. A prisoner gets at most two scheduled interactions per local day, spaced a little over four in-game hours apart. Earlier scheduled visits can use those slots. A second warden does not create extra slots.

For a quick check, select an available warden and right-click the prisoner. A greyed-out job often states the reason, including an ideoligion forbid. A manual priority order does not skip belief, capacity, or prisoner scheduling checks. If the job is available but keeps losing to other work, raise Warden priority or cut competing work.

How will reduction and the final visit work

Each completed will-reduction visit subtracts the warden’s Negotiation Ability as a number. Displayed 100% removes 1.0 will; 115% removes 1.15. The cut cannot exceed the prisoner’s remaining will. Read the warden’s displayed stat instead of guessing from Social alone; capacities change the result.

For an otherwise unaffected pawn, Social contributes 40% plus 7.5 percentage points per level. Social 8 is 100%; Social 10 is 115%. Talking and Hearing can change the final stat. Higher Social speeds visits; it never overrides Abhorrent.

Reaching zero will and finishing enslavement are separate visits. If a normal attempt starts with positive will, that attempt reduces it. An attempt that starts at zero can finish enslavement when Enslave is selected and the job conditions still hold.

Three will at 100 percent Negotiation Ability needs three reduction visits and one final enslavement visit.
At 100% Negotiation Ability, 3.0 will takes four completed visits: three reductions, then the final enslavement.

Count completed visits, not individual chat animations. A warden runs preliminary chats during the job before the will-changing attempt. Several speech bubbles in one visit do not mean several full reductions.

Why “two per day” is not a completion countdown

The interaction limit resets at local midnight; spacing between interactions still applies. Four required visits can land across two local calendar days when both days have two open slots. That does not guarantee a finish inside 48 hours, and it does not mean you must wait two full days either. Start time, used slots, sleep, work priorities, and walking distance all shift the calendar.

Low prisoner mood can show up in feedback, but in this PC 1.6 build it does not multiply down the will reduction. Making the cell miserable does not speed this formula. Keep feeding and treating the prisoner so medical problems and mental breaks do not interrupt the work.

Inspired recruitment can skip positive will

A willing warden with Inspired recruitment can finish enslavement on a successful visit even when will is above zero. Keep Enslave selected. The inspiration is consumed after success. It does not bypass Abhorrent, missing capacities, access problems, or interaction scheduling.

Starting will varies by pawn kind

Pawn kindInitial will range
Tribal penitent / drifter / villager0–1
Tribal archer / tribal warrior / town guard1–3
Tribal hunter / tribal berserker / tribal heavy archer2–4
Tribal chief3–5
Pirate pawn kind2–3

These are initial ranges for those specific pawn kinds, not fixed values for every raider from a faction. Plan from the prisoner’s current will. A previously enslaved pawn gets 2.5 will when imprisoned again. Recheck the interaction mode: an old Enslave order can reset to Maintain only on imprisonment.

Check a warden and estimate the visits

Check one candidate at a time. A bad candidate does not prove the whole colony lacks a warden. The estimate assumes the same Negotiation Ability throughout and successful, uninterrupted visits.

Visits are an estimate from displayed, rounded stats. Near an exact threshold, an extra reduction can be needed. Ability below 40% is outside the vanilla stat range used here. Job readiness and today’s remaining interaction slots are not included.

Enslave versus Reduce will only

A prisoner and warden beside a comparison of Enslave and Reduce will only.
Use Enslave for the full process. Reduce will only leaves the pawn a prisoner after will reaches zero.

Reduce will only is useful when you want to keep a prisoner without finishing enslavement. If you later switch to Enslave while will is already zero, one eligible visit remains. Inspired recruitment does not turn Reduce will only into an automatic enslavement order.

Which prisoners can still be enslaved?

Can I enslave an unwavering prisoner?

Yes. Unwavering loyalty blocks ordinary recruitment, but does not hide Enslave or prohibit this job. Enslaving does not remove the loyalty restriction. See unwavering loyalty for the recruitment consequences.

Why is Enslave missing for a wild person?

The Enslave order is not available for wild people. That is a different case from selecting Enslave and getting the no-warden warning; assigning more wardens will not make the missing option appear.

Why did an Anomaly creepjoiner turn aggressive?

A creepjoiner who can still trigger an aggressive response can turn aggressive when enslavement is attempted, and the attempt fails. A suitable warden and zero will do not remove that special case.

Do I need Ideology, or can Core slaves do this?

This Enslave prisoner order requires Ideology. Core prisoner trading is a different system. The checks on this page apply to unmodded PC 1.6.4871; mods and separate console versions may use different rules.

After the prisoner becomes a slave

Will is the obstacle before enslavement; suppression is a separate concern afterward. Once the pawn has changed status, use the slave suppression and rebellion tool to plan supervision and equipment. Slave collars and body straps do not fix this no-warden warning or replace the will-reduction visits.
