How To Tame Animals: The Safe Handler Checklist

Fast answer: use your best handler, clear the minimum handling gate, carry raw food that matches the diet, skip manhunter-prone combat animals until armor is ready, and roof part of your bird pen in the 1.6 flying-animal era.

Urgent: 90-Second Tame Plan
  • 1. Pick your highest Animals pawn and start with a 0% fail-risk target.
  • 2. Check minimum handling skill before you click the Wildlife hand icon.
  • 3. Bring raw plants for herbivores, raw meat for carnivores, and raw meat only for wargs.
  • 4. If the target is a bird, build a roofed coop segment with a pen marker, flap, and feed inside.
Best First Tames vs Late Flex Picks
Starter runs should prioritize forgiving targets that pay back fast: zero-risk pack animals, zero-wildness poultry, and low-wildness wool or milk animals that do not punish a single failed roll.

Local Core-def snapshot 1.6.4633 rev1266 confirms Warg = CarnivoreAnimalStrict, Chicken/Duck/Goose all have roam timers plus flight stats, and PenMarker / AnimalFlap are dedicated building defs rather than flavor text.
Food Match

The current tool ties food advice to the selected animal. If you are specifically fixing the red “not enough food” message, open the dedicated breakdown below.

Skill & Chance
Handling Skill 8
42%
Gate Clear
Approximate wiki TAC formula: tame chance stat × 2 × (1 - wildness).
Minimum Skill 2
Wildness 25%
Tame-Fail Risk 0%
Recommended Bait Raw plants

This approximation uses the current wiki formula and the local wildness values from Core defs. Hearing, talking, and manipulation penalties can drag the real number down further.

Bird Pen Fix

Roof a coop strip and place feed inside it. That keeps flying birds clustering where your handlers can still rope, feed, and count them correctly.

  • Local Races_Animal_ChickenGroup.xml: chicken MaxFlightTime 3, FlightCooldown 10, roamMtbDays 7.
  • The same file gives duck and goose MaxFlightTime 30, FlightCooldown 10, with the same seven-day roam timer.
  • Local building defs describe the pen marker as the handler target and the animal flap as the insulated barn door.
Why The Handler Won't Tame

Handler never starts the job

The target is usually behind a hidden gate: the pawn is below minimum handling skill, the correct bait stack is forbidden or unreachable, or the handler has no clean path to the animal.

  • Check the selected animal card for the exact skill gate.
  • Stage one reachable stack of the correct raw bait near the handler.
  • Remove area restrictions that stop the pawn and animal from meeting.
  • If the target is in a pen, confirm the pen marker still allows that species.

Alpaca

Low-wildness wool animal that slots into early caravans cleanly.

starter wool
Minimum Skill 2
Wildness 25%
Tame-Fail Risk 0%
Food Type Vegetarian rough
Roam Timer 3 days
Local Ref Races_Animal_SheepGroup.xml
Use alpacas when you want safe early value. Their low wildness makes the chance math reasonable without waiting for Inspired taming, and the fail-risk column stays clean.
If your run is hot, swap the same workflow to dromedaries. If it is cold, swap it to yaks. The handling pattern stays nearly identical.
FAQ & Sources

Can meals tame animals? No. Use raw bait that matches the diet.

Is kibble always safe? No. Wargs are still strict carnivores.

Best miracle target? Save Inspired taming for a thrumbo or other rare breeder you actually want to keep.
